Refractive laser procedures
lASIK
With nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, the light bent incorrectly and it ends up being focused elsewhere, resulting in blurred vision. Traditionally, the blurred vision is corrected by bending (refracting) light rays with glasses or contact lenses. But reshaping the cornea itself also provide the necessary refraction.
LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery- the best know and most commonly performed. We use a special type of cutting laser to precisley change the shape of your cornea-the dome-shaped transparent tissue at the front of your eye- to improve your vision.
PRK
PRK is tipically recommend for patients who are not a candidates for LASIK for their vision correction and who have thin or irregular corneas, or high prescriptions. The difference between this procedure and LASIK is that the reshaping is done on the outside surface of the cornea, rather than under a flap. Both are safe, and abuntantly accomplished procedures for laser vision corrections.
Instead of creating a flap in the epithelium ( the clear protective skin that covers the cornea), the epithelium is simply removed before laser is used th reshape the cornea.
