Vista Medica-Cataract

Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s lens, like a window that is fogged with steam. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults over 55, but eye injuries and certain medications and diseases can also cause cataracts.

Light enters the eye, passing through the lens, and is focused on the retina at the back of the eye. When the lens is cloudy, the light is blocked, and the image that reaches the retina is cloudy and dull, creating poor vision. Glare and dull appearances of color are common complaints from people with cataracts.

The cataract is caused by a change in the chemical composition of the lens. The most common cause is the result of our natural aging process. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent this age-related development. Cataracts can, however, occur at any age, and even rarely are present at birth. Cataracts can be the result of injury, infections or other eye diseases. Since vision loss is usually gradual as the cataract develops, you may not truly notice the decline in your vision until the cataract has progressed

No medication, eye drops, exercises, or corrective lenses can fix cataracts, but they can be treated surgically with a fast, easy procedure.
